What United Kingdom officers actually probe

Boiled down from real applicant transcripts and UK Student guidance.

  • Your CAS by heart — university, course title, start date, fees, deposit paid.

  • Why this course and how it builds on your previous studies and work.

  • Other universities you applied to, offers held, and why you chose this one.

  • Tuition + living costs, and exactly how you fund them, line by line.

  • Post-course plan back home — sector, role, and credible salary expectation.

A real UK Student question, with a strong sample answer

Officer

Why are you choosing to study in the UK instead of your home country or other destinations?

Strong sample answer

The UK offers a one-year intensive MSc, which is shorter and more cost-efficient than the equivalent two-year US or Australian route — that matters when I have a clear job already lined up to return to. In Nepal, the only options are TU's two-year MTech, which is heavily theoretical and shares no curriculum with industry tools. Manchester's MSc is QAA-accredited, the British Council confirmed the degree converts cleanly to NQF level 7 in Nepal, and the Industrial Liaison summer placement gives me hands-on industry exposure I cannot get locally.

Top mistakes that get UK Student applicants refused

Avoid these and you have already cleared the easy half.

Not knowing your CAS by heart

CAS number, exact course title, fees, deposit paid, start date. If you fumble, credibility tanks within the first minute.

"It is the best country to study in" answers

Generic praise of UK education without a concrete reason for this specific course at this university reads as scripted.

Underestimating London living costs

If your numbers are off by a thousand pounds, the officer assumes you have not seriously planned. Have real monthly figures.

Framing a one-year master’s as a path to UK work

The Student route is for study. Anchor post-study plans in the home country first; PSW is a bonus, not the goal.

More questions from the UK Student bank

A taste. The full bank has dozens more, with follow-up hints and three difficulty tiers.

  1. Tell me about the course you have been accepted to and what modules you will study in year one.

  2. Why this university specifically?

  3. What is the total cost of your course?

  4. How much do you need to show for living costs, and where will you study?

  5. Who is funding your studies, and where are the funds held?
